5 great Habits to Start Your Day

As humans, we are at our most productive in the morning. Both our brains and bodies are wired to respond to morning stimulus; sunlight shining through the bedroom windows or the sounds of birds chirping. So it just makes sense that mornings should be easy right?!…

Wrong! For many of us there is one sound we dread more than anything – the sound of our morning alarm. Can’t I have just five more minutes please?! Getting up in the morning may not be for everyone but your morning does have a significant effect on how you handle the rest of the day. If you have a bad morning, it typically results in a day that is also not very good. However, if you set a regular routine and create the right mindset, you will be prepared to tackle anything that comes your way.

Starting your day with good habits will not only help to get you in the right frame of mind but will help you to focus on the day’s events and get organized. The following five habits will jump start your day in the best way possible! Incorporate one or two into your daily routine or try all five for your very own “power hour”.



I know, I know. If you’re like me, getting out of bed in the morning is enough of a challenge let alone getting up early in order to exercise. However, it is a scientific fact that exercise is not only known to have physical benefits but psychological and emotional ones as well. Exercise provides us with a means to assist in controlling our weight and preventing or minimizing the effects of diseases such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. But not only that, the act of exercising actually makes us happier due to the increase in the amount of endorphins released in our body. And who doesn’t want to feel happier? In addition, exercise is also an excellent stress reliever. You don’t need to have an expensive gym membership or exercise for hours on end. A simple brisk walk around the neighborhood or on a local trail will do the trick!


Yes, it does sounds cliché but breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. You wouldn’t expect to go anywhere without gas in the car so why would you expect your body to function properly if it’s not “fueled” up? Your body needs nutrition in order for your brain to be able to think and remain focused throughout the day. Eating a healthy breakfast can at times be difficult, after all you only have a thousand things to do in the morning. Do yourself a favor and keep a few nutritious snacks handy for those mornings when you are crazy busy. Grab and go items such as fruit, granola bars, and nuts are great for times when breakfast just isn’t top priority.

Review goals

I firmly believe that the act of writing down and regularly reviewing your goals is probably one of the best ways to achieve them. By writing down your goals, you are making a personal commitment to follow through with them. And reviewing them each day further reinforces that commitment allowing you to become hyper focused and driven. Just about every successful person I have ever met, had some type of system for goal setting and reviewed them daily if not numerous times throughout the day. To make this process easier, place your goals in a location where they will be seen – your bulletin board in your office, the fridge, or even have a short list of goals set as your computer or smartphone background.

Address your “hot” list

It’s midnight. You can’t sleep. You just remembered that you forgot the email the class mom back about the bake sale. Oh and you forgot to send in the contract to your painter. And you still have to iron daughter’s skirt for her band concert tomorrow. We’ve all had these nights. Nothing ruins a good night’s sleep like the promise of what seems like a thousand undone tasks from the day before. Spend some time each morning dealing with the small things that usually turn in to big headaches. The trick is to only spend about 15 minutes on this and to accomplish those tasks which will take less than five minutes to complete, but will the cause of a lot of stress throughout the day if they are not completed. Send a quick email, pay a few bills, or search for a missing item – get those annoying tasks out of the way so that you can enjoy your day.

Listen to music

Did you know that listening to music is the only activity that is known to stimulate both hemispheres of the brain? That’s amazing! Listening to music will getting ready to start your day can be a great way encourage things like creativity, good judgement, effective decision making, and problem solving skills. Not to mention that listening to music is a great way to boost your mood.

These five habits will get you well on your way to not only a great morning – but a great day too!
